Is this what a Maltipoo temperament is usually like?
I’d never met a dog that walked right up to me without even doing the usual sniff test.
Not long ago, I stayed at Bobby Dog Poolvilla in Gapyeong, South Korea.
Out of all the dogs there, one little pup especially stuck in my memory.
It was Cream, a 3-year-old Maltipoo.
Usually, when you meet a dog for the first time, they start by sniffing you
and circling around a bit while they figure you out.
But Cream skipped that whole process completely.
The moment we met, she walked straight up to me
and suddenly turned around and presented her butt first.
It honestly made me wonder if Maltipoo temperament is normally this people-loving.
Cream definitely had her own way of making a first impression.
At first, I thought maybe something was bothering her.
But when I asked her owner, they told me it meant she wanted to be petted.
So I gave her a few strokes around her backside,
and Cream just stood there with the most relaxed, content expression.
The funniest part came after I stopped.
I figured that would be enough, but she quietly walked back over
and did the exact same thing again, offering up her butt.
I couldn’t help laughing watching her repeat it over and over until she was fully satisfied.
There were other dogs there that day too,
and most of them did the usual routine—sniffing first,
taking a little time to check me out before getting close.
But Cream had absolutely no hesitation from the start.
At that point, I got genuinely curious about Maltipoo temperament.
A Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle,
basically a mixed-breed dog created from those two breeds.
Rather than being an officially established purebred,
they’re what people often call a designer dog.
Maltese dogs tend to bond closely with their owners
and often love attention and affection,
while Poodles are known for being smart, active,
and generally very adaptable to life with people.
Since Maltipoos come from those two breeds,
not just their looks
but their personalities can show a wide mix of traits from both parents.
That’s why it’s hard to say every Maltipoo will act the same way.
Even among Maltipoos, some will walk right up to strangers
while others prefer to take their time
and slowly close the distance.
Common traits in a people-loving Maltipoo temperament
Still, when people talk about Maltipoo temperament,
one trait that comes up a lot
is how much they enjoy human connection.
Many like staying close to their owners
and actively seek out attention and physical affection,
which can be part of their charm.
If they take after the Poodle side more strongly,
you may also notice that they pick up
new behaviors and household rules pretty quickly.
On the other hand, dogs with a stronger tendency to rely on people
may struggle more with being left alone.
That’s why, when raising a Maltipoo, it helps not to think of them as
just a cuddly, affectionate dog,
but also to teach them how to rest independently and build solid daily habits.
So why did she come up to me without even sniffing?
Then the real question becomes:
why would Cream approach a total stranger
without even going through the usual sniffing stage?
Honestly, I don’t think breed alone explains it.
A dog’s personality is shaped not only by traits inherited from the parent breeds
but also by their environment growing up
and the kind of socialization they’ve experienced.
If a dog has met lots of different people from an early age
and learned that touch is a safe, pleasant experience,
they may be much less guarded around strangers.
In Cream’s case, there’s a good chance that approaching people
has repeatedly led to pets, praise, and positive attention.
In other words, getting close to humans became something joyful for her.
Why Maltipoo temperament can vary so much from dog to dog
When you look up Maltipoo temperament, you’ll easily find words like
sociable,
affectionate, and smart.
But because they’re a mixed breed, their personality can shift depending on
which parent’s traits come through more strongly.
That alone can create noticeable differences.
Add in socialization timing, daily environment,
and the relationship with their owner, and the range gets even wider.
So even if Maltipoos are often friendly with strangers,
that doesn’t mean every Maltipoo will walk up like Cream
and offer their butt first.
The people-loving side may be common to some degree,
but how they express it is pure individual personality.
Cream’s bold, no-filter way of showing affection
felt very much like Cream being Cream.
What to keep in mind when living with a people-loving Maltipoo
Even with a naturally social Maltipoo, it’s still important
to gently expose them to different environments from an early age.
Socialization isn’t just about meeting people or other dogs—
it also includes learning to feel comfortable with
new places, sounds, and everyday situations.
Maltipoos may seem relatively low-shedding,
but they still need regular brushing to prevent tangles
along with consistent grooming.
Since they’re smart and love being with people,
mixing playtime with training
is also a big part of a healthy daily routine.
After meeting Cream that day, I felt like I finally understood a little better
why Maltipoo temperament is so often described as
especially people-friendly.
Of course, not every Maltipoo will act exactly like Cream.
But seeing a dog walk up to a stranger
without even properly sniffing first and immediately ask for butt scratches—
and hearing from the owner that she does that with everyone—
still somehow made me feel weirdly chosen.
I guess Cream was just one of those Maltipoos
who really, really loves people.
